Persons Present:

Ex officio members: Jeff Williams (ITS, Chairman)

Voting members: Dick Riedl (RCOE),  Don Rankins (Registrar), Clayton Cooke (Business Affairs), Ed Pekarek (Arts & Sciences)

Guests Attending: Erin Simmons (ITS), Mick Kreszock (Inst. Technology Services)

I. Welcome and Greetings:

The meeting was called to order at 2:08 PM with Jeff Williams presiding. Since there was no quorum, there was no official business conducted by the group.

II.  Information Items

Erin Kirby did a computer demonstation of a sample student portal coded with uPortal tools. uPortal is a project by participating higher education institutions that are constructing a free portal environment.  ASU is eligible through there participation the Java SIG (Special Interest Group). The demo showed how a future portal could be delivered by offering the user the flexibility to customize their look and feel to suit there needs and interests. Some areas of the portal would be fixed to prevent the user from opting out of required sections.  For example, announcements, registration and links to critical campus resources would be protected.

Jeff Williams demonstrated a test version of the iPlanet messaging tool.  Since this product uses standard email interfaces (IMAP), the demonstration showed how you could use the native iPlanet messaging client (Netscape Messenger Express), Campus Pipeline and a typcial email client used at ASU (Netscape Messenger) to create and view the email messages.  This provides a very open environment for users to select their choice for a client.  The advantage of using the iPlanent native client is that address books are on the server and you don’t have to worry about client workstation settings.

III. Ajournment

The  meeting adjourned at 2:45 PM
